Coaching as Leaders

Coaching as Leaders

Contributed by Janet Davie

A number of years ago, Janet Davie, a colleague and friend, introduced me to the concept of identifying one word to guide me for the year ahead. It has become an integral part of my year end review (and in fact the only one, as I believe that review and reflection should be a regular practice not relegated to the end of the calendar year).

In 2024, my word was MOVEMENT. And as I look forward to 2025, I will be using the word SYNERGY to guide me, both personally and professionally. A special shout out to a recent cohort of leader/learners who coached me through the choice between a few words that were in the running.

I had intended to write an article about my process, and the importance of leaders spending as much (if not more) time on their own leadership practice and goals as they do on their teams – however – Janet, who provided the initial inspiration for this process for me recently wrote a blog post on her word of the year.

As we think about coaching as leaders, and the expectations we carry, what word might guide you?

Here are Janet’s reflections:

From Balance to Action & Embracing Momentum in 2025

As the clock resets and a new year begins, I find myself reflecting on the recent journey I’ve been on. My word for 2024 was Balance—a deliberate choice to prioritize harmony across the many aspects of my life. It was a year of recalibration, of learning to steady the scales between work, personal growth, and well-being. Balance served its purpose; it taught me to pause, to breathe, and to find clarity amidst the whirlwind of entrepreneurship.

Yet balance, while essential, is not the destination. It’s a foundation—a steady platform that prepares us for what comes next. For me, that next step is Action.

Using the Power of Balance as a Springboard

Balance isn’t about standing still; it’s about creating the conditions for movement. In 2024, I embraced the pause, it was necessary to stop the busyness, now it’s time to take the leap.

Action, to me, means channeling the strength and clarity I’ve cultivated into purposeful steps forward. It’s about momentum—not the frantic, aimless kind, but intentional, directed energy toward growth and fulfillment. Moving the gears slowly and in the same direction.

Lessons from Balance That Drive Action

Balance has taught me a few critical lessons that I’m carrying into this year of action:

  1. Clarity of Purpose
In the stillness of balance, I uncovered what truly matters. As I step into action, I’m keeping those priorities front and center.
  2. Resilience Through Alignment
When balance is present, our energy aligns with our goals. This alignment creates resilience, a quality I’ll lean on as I take bolder steps in 2025.
  3. The Power of Pause
Action doesn’t mean relentless hustle. The discipline of balance reminds me to pause when needed, ensuring my actions remain thoughtful
    and strategic.

Move from Balance to Action

I’m ready to move from a period of balance into one of momentum, these are a few strategies I’ll use:

  • Set Clear Intentions
What do I want to accomplish, experience, or change? Now is the time to write it down and and keep it visible. There will be adjustments
      along the way as necessary.
  • Start Small, Aim Big
Sometimes the BIG goals can feel daunting, yet small, consistent actions towards the overarching goal will create a ripple effect. I find this
quote from James Clear very helpful as I think about 2025: “When making plans, think big. When making progress, think small.”
  • Celebrate Progress
Action is a journey, not a destination. I will remember to celebrate the milestones along the way to stay motivated and connected with my
      purpose.

Action as a Catalyst for Flourishing

For me, action isn’t just about doing more; it’s about doing what matters most. It’s about taking steps that align with my goals for my business, my health, and my creativity. I’ll admit all three need my attention.
